Some 1.1 billion people worldwide lack access to water, and a total of 2.7 billion find water scarce for at least one month of the year. Inadequate sanitation is also a problem for 2.4 billion people—they are exposed to diseases, such as cholera and typhoid fever, and other water-borne illnesses.
Water covers 70% of our planet, and it is easy to think that it will always be plentiful. However, freshwater—the stuff we drink, bathe in, irrigate our farm fields with—is incredibly rare. Only 3% of the world’s water is fresh water, and two-thirds of that is tucked away in frozen glaciers or otherwise unavailable for our use.
What happens if you don't have clean water? Your body can become permanently stunted and damaged.
50% of malnutrition is linked to chronic infection caused by dirty water and poor sanitation — meaning it doesn't matter what nutrients go in, because the child's damaged gut can no longer absorb them.
What does poor nutrition lead to? In the short term, poor nutrition can contribute to stress, tiredness and our capacity to work, and over time, it can contribute to the risk of developing some illnesses and other health problems such as: being overweight or obese, tooth decay and high blood pressure, just to name a few issues.
What are the Global Nutrition issues?
The major nutrition problems in the world are:
- Protein-Energy Malnutrition (PEM)
- Iron Deficiency.
- Vitamin A Deficiency or Hypovitaminosis A (VAD)
- Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD)
- Nutrition-Related Chronic Diseases.
